Our General English course is intended for students wishing to learn English for a variety of different purposes. All four macro-skills of Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening will be studied.

There are no requirements for entry to this course. Students will be tested on arrival and placed in the level which is most suitable for their current proficiency.

Students can begin their course on any Monday and the four levels are offered in 10 week blocks. Students receive 20 course hours as face to face teaching weekly.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Delivery of the course will emphasise adult learning styles. Teaching and learning strategies will take into account different learning needs, educational backgrounds and preferred learning styles of students. Course delivery methods will include classroom instruction, Computer Assisted Language Learning, group projects, class presentations and discussions and self-paced learning.

Students are assessed weekly through regular progress testing, teacher assessment and self assessment.

Academic English

    Advanced English for Academic Study (EAP) 10 – 40 weeks

    Levels: Preliminary, 1, 2 and 3

    Canterbury Language Academy Advanced English for Academic Study (EAP) program is designed to prepare international students with the English necessary for success in Australian tertiary education. The course concentrates on those aspects of English which students will meet in colleges and universities and develops these in the context of such areas as IT and Business.

    Students will be exposed to teaching methodologies currently in use in Australia which may be different from those that students are familiar with in their home education system. With a strong research and project focus, the course aims to develop students' English language skills within the Australian cultural context.

    Students receive 20 hours as face to face teaching weekly.

    Each level places an emphasis on the development and practice of Study Skills including:
    Academic Reading and Writing;
    Listening and Note Taking;
    Library and Research Skills;
    Academic Vocabulary Extension

    Note:

    EAP Preliminary (IELTS entry 4.5 or 5.0 going to CBC or any other Business College)

    EAP 1 (IELTS entry 5.0 joining USQ after completing 20 weeks of English)

    EAP 2 (IELTS entry 5.5 joining USQ after completing 10 weeks of English)

    EAP 3 (IELTS entry 6.0 joining USQ after completing 10 weeks of English)

IELTS Preparation

IELTS Preparation (10-20 weeks) is a specialist course which is designed to prepare students for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The IELTS test is an internationally recognised tertiary entry English language qualification. A score of 5.5 on the IELTS test (alongside a range of alternative qualifications) is a prerequisite for entry to many Vocational Courses and to specialist EAP courses leading to University study.

Students should already have obtained an intermediate level of English to be accepted for this course. All students will be tested before entry. Students receive 20 course hours as face to face teaching weekly.
